Taipei is one of those Asian cities with a burgeoning craft beer scene, whether it’s homegrown microbreweries, speciality bars with a penchant for the good stuff, or whole festivals dedicated to craft beer. Want to escape the same old brews? Here are our choice picks that prove that beer is much more than industrial mass-produced lagers.
Redpoint Taproom was opened in 2018 to serve the locally-made American-style craft beer produced by Redpoint Brewing Company. But don’t expect any boring old brew. By infusing local flavour into their beers, you can expect beers like the Hoppy Hibiscus IPA and the seasonal Cherry Stuffed Summer IPA, ideal for quenching your thirst during sultry summers. With 12 taps to choose from and a delish menu of Taiwanese-inspired bar snacks, you’ll feel right at home.
Redpoint Taproom is located at No. 132, Sec. 2, Fuxing South Rd, Taipei, p. +886 2 2708 8399. Open Sun-Thu 5pm – 12am, Fri-Sat 5pm – 2am.
At 23 Public, you’ll find a motley crowd of young Taiwanese and expats drinking together in a jovial setting at the long bar. The glue bringing everyone together? The award-winning beers from 23 Brewing Company, with 12 on tap ranging from the big and assertive SDIPA with lush hops to the dark and roasty Pub Stout. Want something safe? The perpetually popular No #1 Pale Ale is crisp, citrusy, and refreshing. Don’t miss Monday Open Mic Nights down in the basement. You’ll find all sorts of munchies here, but we recommend the homemade pizzas and Chinese “lion’s head” meatballs.
23 Public is located at Daan District, No. 100, Xinhai West Rd Section 1, Taipei, +886 2 2363 2387. Open daily 3.30pm – 11.45pm.
Mikkeller Beer Taipei
The famed Danish brewers Mikkeller opened its Taipei pub several years ago, bringing 24 taps of Danish beer and Scandinavian aesthetics to one of the city’s oldest neighbourhoods, Dadaocheng. For around NT$200, you’ll get a glass of acclaimed beer like Mikkeller’s Chipotle Porter, Hazeside IPA, and also guest brews from household names like Taiwan Head Brewers and Great Notion Brewing. Mango Coconut Mochi beer, anyone?
Mikkeller Beer Taipei is located at No. 241, Nanjing West Rd, Datong District, Taipei, p. +886 2 2558 6978. Open Mon-Thu 4pm – 12am, Fri-Sat 4pm – 1am, Sun 4pm – 12am.
Zhang Men Brewing Company boasts perhaps the largest range of beers of any microbrewery in Taiwan, and has four stores in the city alone. But it’s the flagship tap room on Yong Kang Street in Daan that has our heart, with 16 taps flowing at any given time. With so many tasty brews in its repertoire, even the fussiest connoisseur will find something they enjoy, whether it’s the Coffee Hazy Pale Ale, Salty Lemon Gose, or even a Taiwan Pepper Ale that’s been flavoured with chilli and peppers.
Zhang Men is located at 10, Lane 4, Yongkang St, Da’an District, Taipei, +886 2 2395 2366. Open Sun-Thu 1pm – 12am, Fri-Sat 1pm – 1am.
Driftwood isn’t all about craft beer, but it holds its own with a curation of Taiwanese labels. Conceptualised by the people behind the iconic Taihu Brewing, this Tiki-inspired bar is decked out in wooden stools and straw canopy for you to better enjoy your Taihu Blood Orange Berliner Weisse or Long Island Iced Beer. Alternatively, find a place along the bar seating along the sidewalk outside. The bar also has a number of UK and US craft beers on tap, as well as frequent live performances by local singers and bands.
Driftwood is located at No. 46, Kunming St, Wanhua District, Taipei, p. +886 2 2388 3699. Open Mon-Thu 5pm – 11.30pm, Fri 5pm – 1.30am, Sat 3pm – 1.30am, Sun 3pm – 11.30pm.
The 58 Bar
One of the only bars in the city to exclusively sell locally-brewed beers and whiskies, The 58 Bar is a cosy joint near Taipei Station with an impressive bottle rack. There’s an impressive selection numbering in the 100s, and you’ll find labels such as TW 23 Brewing Company’s Big Poppa Scotch Ale and Major Heat Taiwan Jasmine IPA by Taiwan Head Brewers Brewing Co. To match, how does authentic English bar grub sound?
The 58 Bar is located at 58 Kaifeng St, Sec 2, Taipei, p. +886 2 2388 8580. Open daily 6.30pm – 1am.
Funky Fresh Bar
We think that Shilin Night Market is the most overrated night markets in Taipei, but if there’s a redeeming factor somewhere, it’s Funky Fresh Bar. Cashing in on the city’s craft beer craze, this little corner nook caters to tourists and beer-loving locals alike with a heft range of Taiwanese craft brews by the bottle, with an additional six on tap that’s piped through metal mannequins. Make your way down before 9pm for select beers at NT$150 a glass!
Funky Fresh Bar is located at Shilin Night Market, 89-4 Danan Rd, Taipei, p. +886 930 343 055. Open daily 7pm – 12am.
Another Brick is run by Belgians, and if their history books are any indication, these guys love their beer. This funky retro chic bar (you’ll want to take a photo in front of their vinyl record wall or eclectic fish tank) buzzes with thirsty tipplers on all days of the week, though it’s usually more mellow in the early evening. Take the opportunity to snag a happy hour drink before 9pm, choosing from a good lineup of Belgian craft breweries like Cuvée des Trolls and Bertinchamps.
Another Brick is located at 31 Sec. 1, Xinhai Rd, Zhong Zheng District, Taipei , p. +886 2 2365 2371. Open Sun-Thu 6pm – 1am, Fri-Sat 6pm – 2.30am.
