Barbecue and bourbon? Hell, yes. Happening Wednesday, 24 July 2019, Maker’s Mark’s Bourbon and Meatsmith Telok Ayer are presenting a five-course food and drink pairing (priced at $98++ per person) that is beyond heavy and hearty. Fair warning, make sure that you’re well-prepared for overindulgence.
The five-course dinner starts with a refreshing duo of Oysters Rockefeller and a Maker’s Craft Highball, and follows up with a dram of Maker’s Mark to be sipped alongside a meaty Stuffed Chicken Wing with Pork Sausage. The classic apple-pork combination gets a new lease of life with braised fennel and carrot with the Apple Bourbon Pork Chop, served with a Maker’s Old Fashioned. After a well-charred Beef Tenderloin with the spicier Maker’s Mark 46, bourbon continues playing a role in the food in the Maker’s Mark Creme Brûlée.
A family-run establishment, Maker’s Mark has been handcrafted by the Samuels family (Chief Distillery Officer Rob Samuels is the third generation) in the last 66 years, from start to hand-dipping wax seals of each bottle. Something we learned recently: the main flavouring grain of the the mash bill in this whiskey is soft red winter wheat (rather than rye) as it carries a palate-pleasing sweetness that prevents the unwanted bite from the alcohol. They’re also the only distillery in Kentucky to possess their own water source – a 33-acre Natural Water Sanctuary located on distillery grounds – filtering water to its pure calcium and magnesium-rich state.
