Macau does gambling and casinos well, but what kind of “Vegas of Asia” would the city be if the drinks aren’t up to scratch? Once you’ve had your feel of heart-thumping entertainment, light shows, and jackpot machines, it’s time to get the drinks flowing at these best drinking spots in the city, from whisky and wine bars to bespoke cocktail joints.
Vida Rica Bar
Vida Rica is special in the fact that it boasts three interactive bars serving cocktails, champagne, tapas and coffee, but you’ll want to focus on the first. The cocktails here are led by the Jacob Shteyntsayg, who’s developed a Legends & Cocktails art menu inspired by old Macanese legends: The Ruins of St. Paul with London dry gin, chamomile tea, lemongrass, lychee, and sesame cordial or the tiki-style Man Tai with vodka, rum, pineapple, lime, and mango. Did we mention Vida Rica is also Macau’s Bar of the Year for 2019? Coupled with the impressive marble-crystal interior and sleek views of the city, we totally see why.
Vida Rica is located at 2/F, N.945, Avenida Dr Sun Yat Sen, Macao, +853 8805 8928. Mon-Thu 5pm – 12am, Fri 5pm – 1am, Sat 3pm – 1am, Sun 3pm – 12am.
The St. Regis Bar
The St. Regis Bar is one of the most creative lounges on this side of the Cotai strip, combining an elegant and experiential aesthetic (think gold rings and a chandelier-with thoughtful cocktails that pay homage to Macau’s Portuguese and Chinese heritage. Gin aficionados will appreciate the bar’s house-infused gins running the gamut from lychee and roasted pineapple to apple and rosemary, while seasoned tipplers can enjoy experimental concoctions such as Maria do Leste, a Bloody Mary-esque drink featuring piri piri chilli and pink peppercorns. Don’t care what you drink? HK$258 gets you unlimited gin, house wines, beers, and cocktails from 6pm to 8.30pm every day!
The St. Regis Bar is located at The St. Regis Bar, 1/F, The St. Regis Macao Hotel, Cotai Central, p. +853 2882 8898. Open daily 12pm – 1am.
The Ritz-Carlton Bar & Lounge
The Ritz-Carlton Bar is easily one of the city’s most recognised drinking spots, with 51st-floor views of the neon Cotai skyline to boot. Bar Manager Maxim Schulte shakes up some of the meanest cocktails in town, from a relatively simple gin tonic (their gin trolley experience features over 140 gin varieties and artisanal tonics, rolled up to your table) to more extreme stuff like a Red Snapper Martini with tomato soup, black pepper-infused vodka, and barbecue smoke. Enjoy a nightly jazz performance while lounging on their plush leather couches, then drink some more.
The Ritz-Carlton Bar & Lounge is located at 51/F, The Ritz Carlton Macau, Estrada da Baía da Nossa Senhora da Esperança, Macau, p. +853 8886 6712. Open Sun-Thu 12pm – 1am, Fri-Sat 12pm – 2am.
China Rouge is more of a club than a bar, but do they have equally creative concoctions and quality drinks to match? You bet. Evoking the shimmer and glamour of Shanghai’s classical era, the exquisite interior and live jazz performances complement the array of vintage wines, champagnes, and award-winning cocktails like the Eastern Fashioned, a potent mix of black label whisky, Mandarin Napoleon Liqueur, and tangerine-infused Grand Marnier. Subtly sweet and sour with lots of complexity, you could say it mirrors the essence of China Rouge.
China Rouge is located at Galaxy Macau, G/F, G001, Macau, p. +853 8883 2221. Open Sun, Tue-Thu 9pm – 2am, Fri-Sat 9pm – 3am. Closed Mon.
Antica Trattoria is our Hospitality Team of the Year (Macau), and once you head down, you’ll see why. This laidback restaurant-bar transports you to the Italy of the past with its lush old world vibes and staff that treat you like family. Featuring some of the best pastas and pizzas (we highly recommend the meatball pizza) in town, it’s a great setting for small groups and large parties alike. As for drinks, how do wonderful cocktails inspired by the flavours of Italy – like a Bloody Mary with Gustav Vodka, Red Bell Pepper, and Tomato Water – sound?
Antica Trattoria is located at Avenida Sir Anders Ljungstedt, Edificio Vista Magnifica Court, No 40,42,46, Macau, p. +853 2875 5103. Open Mon-Thu 12pm – 11pm. Fri-Sun 12pm – 12am.
The Macallan Bar
No prizes for guessing what The Macallan Bar excels in. This intimate space in the Galaxy Macau is the best watering hole for whisky lovers, with over 400 malt whiskeys and rare bottles from The Macallan distillery — including a 57-year old bottle — ready for your next nightcap. The interior is everything you’d expect from a luxury whisky lounge: leather armchairs, with fur throws, and a fireplace. In other words, the perfect backdrop as you sip dram after dram or a mean Old Fashioned.
The Macallan Whisky Bar is located at Galaxy Hotel, 2/F, 203, p. +853 8883 2221. Open Sun-Thu 5pm – 1am, Fri-Sat 5pm – 2am.
The recently opened Goa Nights in Taipa Village serves modern Indian tapas and cocktails spread over a three-story venuu Marked by bohemian decor and a little balcony that overlooks the entire Taipa Village, this chill spot recently won Macau’s Bar of the Year (Non-Hotel) at The Bar Awards 2019. Known for its spectacular modern Indian cocktails, Goa Nights’s award-winning mixologist Chetan Gangan shakes up concoctions like the Goa — bourbon fat-washed with chorizo fat, creme de cassis, and Peychaud’s bitters. With vibrant Indian tapas like chicken tikka sliders and Goa-style nachos, you won’t find an experience like this anywhere else in town.
Goa Nights is located at 118 Rua Correia Da Silva, Macau, +853 2856 7819. Open Tue-Sun 5pm – 1am. Closed Mon.
Old Taipa Tavern
Beer and sports geeks will call this one home, with over 50 labels of craft beers and ciders to its name. Even the wine collection is very decent. This two-storey Taipa village pub is very much an expat hangout, and is a world away from the glitziness of Macau’s casinos and megamalls. Grab an Irish-style pub meal over live music, watch live sporting events from a giant screen and seven smaller ones: there are enough things to do at Old Taipa Tavern to keep you from lunchtime till supper.
Old Taipa Tavern is located at 21 Rua dos Negociantes, Taipa Old Village, Macau, +853 2882 5221. Open Mon-Fri 2.30pm – 2.30am, Sat-Sun 1pm – 2.30am.
